Onkyo CBX-300 CD Receiver System

Price: $139.99

Editorial Reviews:
The 2nd generation CBX-300 CD receiver system is a blend of style, direct iPod integration and superb music performance. The focus has been on providing an accomplished mix of CD, MP3, WMA, iPod and radio playback. It sports a black saran net across the entire frontage, giving it greater appeal wherever you decide to place it. The CBX-300's construction supports exemplary audio fidelity, especially for the low-end frequencies. The design also incorporates speaker developments such as Onkyo's own OMF (Onkyo Micro Fiber) diaphragms and Aero Acoustic Drive technology. OMF is a pure, ultra-fine cotton weave that absorbs vibrations and enables a fast, accurate response. In addition to playing CDs, you can slot your iPod directly into the CBX-300's top-loading dock to access your AAC and MP3 files, podcasts, videos and photos. Unlike the bulk of music systems aimed at incorporating the iPod, this CD receiver system has been designed to deliver serious audio quality and lively music playback. The accompanying remote control gives you more functionality, such as the ability to skip through tracks or switch to shuffle mode. The CBX-300 also includes a video output terminal for output of your iPod's videos or photos. Amazing product
5 out of 5 stars.
Onkyo has always made good products, but this thing is amazing. I was not prepared for how good this thing sounds. I put my 16gb iPod Nano in and the sounds is really clean and balanced. It is nice to have a few quick EQ settings to adjust the sound if you need to. All my iTunes music is ripped at 320 kbps.

Excelptional CD/iPod Player
5 out of 5 stars.
This unit provides a rich, full sound and is an exceptional value at the price. Compares favorably with much more expensive units, including Bose.

Good value but....
3 out of 5 stars.
First of all, the unit I received was made in China and not in Malaysia as one of the other reviewers indicated. Personally, this is irrelevant.

The sound was pretty good but not what I expected from an Onkyo system even though this is a relatively small size all-in-one shelf system. I wasn't very impressed by the preset equalizer settings. The sound generally felt hollow compared to the Panasonic SA-PM15 that I wanted to replace and I wish it allowed independent adjustment of the base and treble settings. Generally sound fidelity was not super impressive and the very high frequencies appeared muted. However the sound quality was adequate for its class. Also it's one of the few better quality ipod docking systems available with an integrated cd player and has a radio, which is nice to have. The design is very pragmatic and Amazon.com's current price tag of $139.00 is nice. Overall a pretty good deal.

Does the job, but don't expect much boom
4 out of 5 stars.
I own a Cambridge Soundworks unit w/ the same form factor and similar features. Compared to the Onkyo in terms of audio quality, certainly the more expensive Cambridge Soundworks has a deeper richer bass. In fact, the Onkyo I'd say barely has adequate bass. However, the ease-of-use, stylish elegance and price w/ similar features makes the Onkyo a very good buy. If you listen to classical, talk-radio or vocals, this will do just fine in a 12'x12' room. If listen to hip-hop, rap, or any music that has deep bass, you'll hear the bass out of the Onkyo, but there definitely won't be a 'boom', just a subtle 'thud'. In short, $100 less compared to a Cambridge Soundworks if you're willing to give up a deep bass. This Onkyo is also made in Malaysia, not made in China so I have a little better confidence in quality of assembly.

No "video out" capability when used with newest iPods
3 out of 5 stars.
I must begin by stating I don't own this product. My comments are based solely on the published specs.

Since getting my 4'th gen Nano I've been looking for a way to conveniently listen to material on it through external speakers. So I've been looking at a lot of "docking FM radio" type products.

The reason I took a pass on this one is because it does not support video out for my Nano 4G. Apple changed the video out capability of the iPod a gen or so previous. The newer iPod's apparently require an Apple authentication chip to enable video out. (For more info try Googling the phrase "ipod locks TV out")

Looking at the specs at www.us.onkyo.com I found the qualification of "audio only" for the iPod Touch, iPod Classic, iPod Nano (3rd gen), and iPhone. (And, of course, this also applies to any iPods newer than these).

Just wanted to point out the "audio only" limitation so others would be aware of it when considering it. Frankly I'm puzzled why the manufacturers do not upgrade their products so that they will work with the newer iPods. But since they often do NOT do this, you have to check the fine print to see if you're getting all the functions you think you are buying.
