Editorial Reviews:
Put the Sony STR-DE197 at the heart of your home stereo system. This sophisticated entertainment engine integrates an amplifier with a pre-amplifier and a radio in one compact unit. Everything else connects to the receiver so it must be a reliable performer. Sony Unified Remote Unit Dimensions - 16.93 x 5.22 x 11.89 (430 x 132.5 x 302 mm) / Weighs 15.43 lbs Supplied Accessories - Instruction Manual / FM Wire Antenna / RM-US185 Remote Commander(R) Remote Control / AM Loop Antenna / Size AA Batteries (2)
Home theater may be the rage, but there's no getting around the need for affordable, high-quality music playback, and Sony's STR-DE197 stereo receiver can be a huge help in that department. The integrated amplifier pumps out 100 watts per channel across both its 2 channels and uses discrete output transistors--that is, transistors in place of cheaper and lower-quality integrated-circuit chips--to ensure high-quality music presentations.

The receiver features an FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM) and a UniCommander remote control with phosphorescent glow keys for easy access, even in the dark. Separate A and B speaker outputs (stereo left/right) let you listen to the same program across two sets of speakers placed in different parts of the house.

There's no phono input, but the unit's 4 stereo analog audio (left/right RCA) inputs accommodate, for instance, a cassette deck, a VCR, your cable-box outputs, or a DVD player. (Make sure your television has sufficient inputs for the number of video sources whose audio you plan to route through the receiver.) A bass-boost circuit enhances your program's low frequencies for greater musical or cinematic input.

A switched AC outlet lets you plug another device into the receiver, conserving wall sockets and powering up the plugged devices at the same time as the receiver. When the receiver powers on and off, so also will the component plugged into the power outlet, provided you leave its power set to "on." Listening at night? Plug into the receiver's .25-inch headphone jack so you won't wake the family or neighbors.

What's in the Box
Receiver, RM-US185 UniCommander remote control, remote batteries (2 AA), FM wire antenna, AM loop antenna, user's manual, and warranty information.

Custom Reviews:
Great performer for a low cost.
4 out of 5 stars.
I'm not much of an audiophile. I don't possess the resources to be much of an audiophile. All I needed was a capable stereo receiver to replace my old Pioneer system (purchased in the early 90s) and viola: I am happy.

Setup was a snap, though attaching the speaker wire to the proper outlets is a little difficult, though that's more my own fault for placing the receiver in my stereo/TV stand just off the floor. But, what I got for my small trouble was a nice performing system (hooked up with a pair of polkaudio TSi300 speakers) that gives me clean and clear sound. I'm certain that a $500 receiver/amp would perform better. I also know that I saved over $350 not pursuing audiophile level equipment. This Sony set is good enough for my listening pleasure.

So far, in just over a year, the system has performed wonderfully and without flaw (except for the occasional human error).

The receiver can be played through a CD player, DVD player, TV, or just about any other type of electronics on that level. It issues a nice well developed sound for it's class and the volume level keeps a well modulated sound no matter how loud I turn it up.

I recommend this receiver for those looking to own a nice stereo music system for less than an overall total of $700. I have slightly higher priced speakers (as indicated above) but really you can settle for the Sony SS-B3000 pair until you have the cash to upgrade or update your stereo pleasure. I have my system directly connected to my computer as well and Windows Media Player enables me to play music for many hours at a time.

This is a lower level system, so if you are an audiophile of any measure then you probably don't want to start here. Just not enough for you. But, if you simply want to begin your music journey with the best system you can by for little money then this is the place to begin.

Enjoy your new Sony STRDE197 receiver, and tell 'em ceffalo helped you decide.

Sony Receiver Is Excellent Value
5 out of 5 stars.
Needed a new receiver to power a 600 disk CD jukebox for our salon and spa. Excellent response and sound quality delivery.
Delivery of product was also prompt.
An excellent value!

Sony Tuner
4 out of 5 stars.
Wanted a reasonably priced receiver, mostly to get speaker-quality sound for sat TV and DVD player. Fills the need well. Pretty easy to set up, easy to use with remote, good sound quality.

Nice basic receiver
4 out of 5 stars.
Nothing special but above average power for this price range. Comparably priced to large national retailer's but without the hassle of dealing with their lousy in-store service.

Typical Sony quality, a well-made receiver, seems to have ample power with no clipping, controls are fairly easy to use and understand. The only complaint I have is that the volume control requires a lot of spinning to change the volume level, but the remote works better in that regard.

I agree with J.M.
5 out of 5 stars.
J.M. is correct. I don't know what anyone else is talking about with low ratings. We have two outside speakers and two indoor. We hooked all of them up and with the A/B switch can listen outside or indoors or both at the same time. The sound is fantastic both in and out. No spot for a sub-woofer but the sound is so superior we don't even miss it. It does have bass boost which makes up for it.
At this price and shipped here in 2 days, FANTASTIC!
