Home Theater Speaker Placement.
Home Theater Speaker Placement.
If you place your home theater speakers incorrectly you will have actually disabled your home theater system. You have limited its ability to function as it truly can, the performance will be sub-optimal, and you will not enjoy your home theater experience as much as you could.
It is very worthwhile to do some research into the optimal setup for your home theater speakers. There are many factors to consider and the feat can be a daunting one. Compound this with the specific responsibility of each separate home theater speaker. Each of the 6-8 speakers in a typical home theater system have a different, unique job. The placement of each is critical to have all the components working together as they should. Fortunately there is help from experts, mathmeticians and physicists, available.
Some factors that are used to determine home theater speaker placement are
1. room size (length, width, height)
2. room anomalies (corners, odd shaped room)
3. number of home theater speakers
4. system power (wattage of receiver and speakers)
5. primary viewing position (distance from TV, distance from walls, etc.)
6. other furniture in the room and its position
In my website I couldn't properly do justice to the science and art of home theater speaker placement. Your best resource is literature. Handy as a reference guide and covering all the bases.

If you do decide to try it out on your own, experiment. Use 2 or 3 different movies and try different speaker placements within your room. Your judgement on the performance of any one setup will be made from the primary viewing position. This will be the premier position that a movie is watched from. If you were alone watching a movie, where would you sit? This will be your home base for determining the optimal placement of your 6-8 home theater speakers.
Be patient, be intelligent, and your future home theater experience will be a positive one. One that you will have created and can enjoy for years to come.
